About the event

Join us for presentations by local experts about different aspects of the Susquehanna River! Our fall presentation will be on Tuesday, November 17th, 2026 at the Waterman Center. Colleen Wolpert will be presenting Overwintering Insects and How You Can Help Them Complete Their Life Cycle. Learn what you can do to improve habitat for local butterflies, moths, fireflies, flower flies and more.  It is more than planting host plants and leaving the leaves, but it is quite simple.  Surviving through their entire life cycle is vital, so that we will have greater diversity and numbers while supporting the food web.

Insect enthusiast Colleen Wolpert has enjoyed nearly 60 different species of butterflies on her ¾ acre property, at least 4 different species of fireflies, and 100s of moths.  For decades, she has been teaching about gardening practices that increase the diversity of insects species by improving habitat.  As a long time Board Member of the Naturalists’ Club of Broome Co. as well as a volunteer naturalist at Waterman Conservation Education Center and for Finger Lakes Land Trust, she has led nature walks, butterfly counts, and moth nights in addition to tabling at events and giving a variety of presentations.  Now as a Nature Educator for CCE-Broome, she brings her knowledge and enthusiasm for this topic to a wider audience.
